How Is Silicomanganese Produced?​​

​​Raw Materials:​​

  ​​Manganese ore​​ (rich in Mn, often from deposits)

  ​​Quartz (silica)​​ – source of silicon
• •
  ​​Ferromanganese slag or iron scrap​​ – to adjust iron content
• •
  ​​Coke or coal​​ – acts as a reducing agent and carbon source

​​Process Steps:​​

1. 1.
   ​​Charging:​​
   The raw materials are loaded into an electric arc furnace.
2. 2.
   ​​Heating & Reduction:​​
   High temperatures (~1600–1700°C) are used to reduce manganese and silicon oxides using carbon:

     MnO₂ → Mn (reduced)
   • •
     SiO₂ → Si (reduced)
3. 3.
   ​​Melting & Alloy Formation:​​
   The reduced elements combine with iron (from ore/scrap) to form ​​silicomanganese alloy​​.
4. 4.
   ​​Tapping & Casting:​​
   The molten alloy is tapped from the furnace and cast into ingots or ladles for cooling and transport.
